I love Zorin OS and I love my Chromebook. Is there a way to install Zorin on the Chromebook? Or once I have Ubuntu installed (plenty of instructions around on how to do that) can I "upgrade" to Zorin? I really want to do this! Thanks!

Hi woakes, I don't know enough about the Chrome Book other than it appears to be very 'proprietary' based - it's not something I would ever purchase if I had the spare cash!

If there is an Ubuntu 'workaround' try using the 'workaround' for Zorin - you can't 'upgrade' to Zorin from Ubuntu - it needs to be installed separately. :D

Hope this helps!

There is many tutorials how to install Ubuntu to the Chromebooks in the net. This is one of the most complete and detailled video tutorial in You Tube.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qpjTzav3kw

This tutorial is using a ACER c 710 type Chromebook, so there is 320 Gb hard drive. In many other Cromebooks there is only 16 Gb SSD. So is there space enough for making dualbooting system in that case. At least there will be very little space left for storing any data to internal memory.

The SSD can be replaced also with a bigger one 64Gb or 128Gb as seen in this guide. http://www.androidcentral.com/how-upgra ... chromebook or in this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jOHHyJMgWk or use only ext.USB for data storing.

Here is an other tutorial using Crouton

Here is the video link to that tutorial.

Hi,

Zorin is based on Ubuntu, if it works for Ubuntu, it should work for Zorin!. :D

Thanks, Wolfman and Swarfendor437.

I have become pretty good at installing Chrubuntu on the Chromebook. It is specially designed for Chromebooks and their peculiarities. It is very easy to install and remove, which is good way to learn.

I think that maybe the solution is to ask the Chrubuntu folks to add "Zorin-desktop" as an option in their script. Only the "*ubuntu-desktop" flavors are currently available.

I have grown to like Kubuntu... not as well as Zorin but better than Unity, etc. I am using Zorin on two Windows 7 laptops in the house and happily so. I have everything syncing to my Google Drive, so wherever I am, I can get what I need.

Thanks again,

Woakes

So, because of the proprietary nature of Chrome you have to effectively stick a 'proprietary' OS that meets its 'proprietaryness' in the form of Chrubuntu.

Checkout what PPA's (repositories) you can add. Also as it is Ubuntu based, see if you can install 'GnoMenu':

The instructions on this page also tell you how to install 'avant-window-navigator' :D

hi,
i have a acer C720P chromebook, intel celeron 1.4ghz, 4gb ram, and updated to 128gb ssd.
its fast and lite and just right for a ubuntu distro.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume no one has successfully installed zorin on a chromebook yet.
Even the chrubuntu and crouton installers and bodhi OS all seem to have confiquration problems of different types.
I have been very interested in the work of John Lewis, a Linux engineer from Ireland.
He has been working on coreboot roms for chromebooks, which try to patch /remedy the issues of the different model chromebooks to prepare for a usb install of whatever flavour linux you want. This work is not perfected yet, however he has just released a new script which pretty much identifies your machine, creates a backup, and then downloads the correct coreboot script and installs it. You can then run your usb install, you will need to activate usb boot from a root shell. This is brand new and you could say still in testing but mostly positive results.
This is not dualboot, you end up with your distro as the OS on your chrome laptop.
(make backup chrome os in recovery mode, you can always recover your CB to stock, this much i have done already).

In the next week when i can get some time I will use this script on my acer C720P, and install a copy of xubuntu 14.04, to assess it.
(lots of documentation for this distro and the C720, if everything goes well Ill run it for a few days then try an install of zorin lite. and if successful will post back here.
Any news on new lite edition?, Ill use 8 anyway but ubuntu 14.04 has many fixes to integrate with chromebooks easier.

If anyone is interested the new script is here https://johnlewis.ie/custom-chromebook- ... -download/
thats a web page, not direct download.
The main page https://johnlewis.ie has some more info on different chromebooks and fixes, tho i think the new script will overide a lot of this.
THere is also some good info here on setting seabios flags for seabios default boot after removing write protection.
https://johnlewis.ie/how-to-make-seabio ... acer-c720/
.For me this is all good and I feel better than chubuntu or crouton, Unless you want dualboot of course. ultimately it may lead to easy installs of Zorin lite or core on these lightweight fast cheap little machines.

I am new here and not a coder/ programmer but an old long in the tooth aussie ex hardware and wires tech, trying to learn linux.
so if this information is not warranted delete it, .
I will post back only when i have been able to do a successful zorin install.
if someone more gifted than I and is interested in chromebooks finds this useful and can do some testing, that would be great..
thanks
Stuart
